FOLD: Art, Metaphor and Proactive

The International Museum of Arts and Sciences (IMAS) in McAllen, and on the UTRGV Edinburg Campus at the Visual Arts Gallery and at the Visitors Center, McAllen and Edinburg in Rio Grande Valley, Texas.

2018

"FOLD: Art, Metaphor, and Practice," featured at UTRGV’s 2018 FESTIBA, illuminated the work of international artists and scholars using experimental materials to explore the concept of folding as both a physical act and a metaphorical paradigm. Drawing on Gilles Deleuze's philosophical insights on the fold, the exhibition examined how folds act as dynamic interfaces between form and conceptual metaphor, challenging and redefining our perceptions of space and time.

This theme resonated deeply with FESTIBA's focus on borders, offering a reflective lens on identity transformation and the fluid boundaries between the personal and communal, particularly from a women's perspective during heightened border issues in the region. The exhibition was held across three venues—IMAS, the UTRGV Edinburg Campus Visual Arts Gallery, and the Visitors Center—featuring installations and performances that evolved with each location to highlight the transient nature of artistic expression.

Engaging over 40 UTRGV students and faculty, this two-month, multifaceted project was enriched by discussions from scholars in philosophy, psychology, social history, art history, literature, and women's studies. These conversations emphasized the experiences and perspectives of women, linking them to broader societal debates about borders and identity.

"FOLD" not only showcased the power of art to address contemporary societal issues but also stood as a potent testament to art's role in reflecting and shaping discourse on identity, borders, and the human condition through both creative and academic exploration.
